UNIVERSITY OF TÜBINGEN, GERMANY
Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology of the Institute of Pre- and Protohistory and Medieval Archaeology

The Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology is housed in the Institute of Pre- and Protohistory of the University of Tübingen. The department conducts field research world-wide and seeks to incorporate fieldwork into training of students. The collections of the department include diverse archaeological finds, fossil hominid material, ethnographic finds, as well as a wide range of photographic and written documentation from our field projects.
The department`s collections are perhaps best known for the Aurignacian ivory statuettes and flutes from several sites of the Swabian Jura. These magnificent finds are some of the oldest examples of Paleolithic art, and so-far the oldest known musical instruments worldwide. The institute offers scientific advice on the questions of age and provenance, production and playing techniques for the Palaeolithic bone and ivory flutes.
